They both support Common Core Standards in the schools, which was refreshing to hear, and each seems to grasp the differences between standards and curriculum.Mr. Pappas does think the state should make it easier for charter schools to get approval, and we agree with that.On the state's 1.7 billion rainy-day fund, the two concur that some of the money should be spent on infrastructure and road maintenance. Mr. Pappas noted that the fund is not a savings account but rather is money set aside to stabilize the state budget. While the state should continue to grow it, he says, some funds should be diverted to immediate infrastructure needs.It's good to hear that both candidates understand the importance of transparency in government. They grasp the concept behind public records, and we think each would fight to defend the public's right to view open records at no cost. Mr. Cameron and Mr. Pappas both say it's the duty of public officials to maintain public records, so taxpayers should not have to pay a dime to view them. We urge the winner on Nov. 4 to work to convince his peers of that concept.The two are clearly divided on government's role.Mr. Cameron sees government as the solution, even extending into such areas as trying to fix the state's wage gap. He says that is one of the biggest drags on Wyoming's economy, arguing that women, especially single mothers, are unable to climb out of poverty. That then forces them to rely on government welfare, he says, costing all Wyoming taxpayers.According to Mr. Cameron, that gap can even be seen in state government. He suggests the state follow the federal lead on classifying workers to fit pay scales, regardless of their position or gender. But we fear he might try to extend such economic tinkering into trying to raise the minimum wage to a so-called "living wage." We oppose all such effortsMr. Pappas, on the other hand, rightly says government actually can be the problem and he would favor less intervention. We agree with that, especially coming from someone like Mr. Pappas who deals with large-scale government projects. The unique perspective he has gained from being on both sides - as a private contractor and representing government - would serve his constituents well at the Capitol.Mr. Pappas' focus on education also includes his views on Wyoming's coal industry.He says discovering more uses for coal is the key to the state's future. He supports the efforts at the University of Wyoming to develop ways to make coal cleaner. Mr. Cameron also sees the importance of protecting Wyoming's leading industry, though his vision for how to do that is less clear.And both agree the state should continue to look at alternative energy sources, like wind and solar.In the end, we like Dameione Cameron's passion for the job. But he lacks depth on the issues - at times during the interview he seemed to be flying by the seat of his pants - as well as clear solutions on how to solve the state's problems.Mr. Pappas, on the other hand, offers a deeper, more thoughtful approach. He appears much more ready to step into the job than does Mr. Cameron.Stephan Pappas says the Legislature needs an architect among its members.
